How To Unclog A Toilet

At BlockBusters we like to help our customers limit unnecessary drainage & plumbing call outs – so here are a few tips on how to attempt to unblock a blocked toilet or at least reduce the risk of it happening:

  • First clear the area immediately around the toilet, including any bath/toilet mats and other items
  • You may be able to clear the blockage naturally through intermittent flushing by leaving any back up of water to drain slowly away
  • You may also be able to adjust the ball float to allow more water to be flushed – on modern toilets this is often set to a lower amount to save water but you may need to adjust this dependent on usage and pipe configuration
  • If you have DIY rods or a plunger you may be able to shift the blockage yourself but great care should be taken and you should wear gloves and protect yourself appropriately
  • One final option would be to fill a bucket of water up and then pour fairly quickly down the toilet from a height above the toilet – this may give enough force to help clear any minor blockage

If none of the above unblocks your toilet you may have a bigger drainage problem which you will need an expert to fix.  If you are worried about your drainage and need an emergency plumber in Brighton, East Sussex or the Surrey area please contact us via the form or give us a call on 0800 0689282 today and one of our team will be happy to help.
